• After A 4 Year Hiatus, Riverboats Return To The Mississippi

It has been nearly 4 years since riverboats sailed from the hub of New Orleans. After the Majestic America Line failed with the economy in 2008, their three boats, the American Queen, Delta Queen, and Mississippi Queen all stopped cruising. Over this same four years the ocean cruising out of the Port of New Orleans has come to see a revitalization and is now booming with record numbers.

Just 6 months ago life began to come back to the riverboat scene on the Mississippi. Prescilla Presley christened the re-launching of the American Queen in April with a champagne bottle over its bow in Memphis. The newly refurbished 436-passenger American Queen, the largest steamboat paddle wheeler in the world, now sails under the American Queen Steamboat Company name. It's first inaugural Mississippi River cruise took it back to New Orleans. It was the first river cruise to come to New Orleans in nearly four years.

In the meantime another riverboat company, American Cruise Lines', has been on a journey of their own. In August, American Cruise Lines' launched the first new paddle wheeler in almost 20 years, designed for overnight travel on American rivers. The Queen of the Mississippi was built in Salisbury, MD. It is now the sixth ship to be currently sailing under American Cruise Lines. The new 150-passenger Queen of the Mississippi will be found sailing the Mississippi, Ohio, Tennessee, and Cumberland rivers.

Is American river cruising for you? With so many exotic destinations in foreign countries sometimes it's easy to forget what is available on the smaller waterways in your own backyard. American river cruising can offer an experience unlike any other. River cruising typically offers a more intimate and leisurely cruising experience as compared to the larger ocean cruising vessels and vacations. From boarding, to dining, to the port excursions and everything in between you'll have a completely different experience on a river cruise. Maybe your next cruise vacation should be on an American river.
