  • When pre-ordering liquor there is now a 2 bottle maximum per cabin limit. This is a recent change from a 4 bottle limit. People have reported the new online order limit is currently only set up as a "per order" limit and have been able to create multiple orders to purchase additional items.
  • Order before boarding, this service is not guaranteed to be available once onboard - plan ahead!!
  • Note: Those who have been able to order once onboard have reported being able to order in addition to their pre-order limit of 2 bottles.
  • The liquor, wine, and beer choices do occasionally change. The lists below are continually updated, but if you do not see something be sure to call and ask or check the website at the link above.
  • Due to TX & AL state liquor laws ships departing from these ports can't deliver alcoholic beverages to your cabin until they are in international waters. It may even be delayed until the following day.
  • The pre-ordered liquor bottle prices are not cheap. They are about 2-3 times what you'd pay onshore for a bottle.
  • The savings you get by pre-ordering liquor bottles are realized when you compare it to the individual drink prices onboard. Pre-ordered liquor bottles are 2-3 times cheaper compared to the price of the same quantity of alcohol purchased through individual drinks onboard.

Carnival is now offering the "Cheers" Beverage Program on select ships.

The "Cheers" Beverage Program is flat-rate daily pricing for alcoholic drinks, non-alcoholic frozen drinks, wine by the glass and soda.
The program, which started as a trial in August 2012 on the Carnival Victory, is still in "trial" but has expanded onto additional Carnival ships.

For full program details and a current list of the Carnival ships offering the program go here:

Drink Coupons

As of February 2013 Drink Coupons are no longer sold. Previously purchased Drink Coupons will be accepted through February 2014.

Drink Coupons have been superceded by the new "Cruise Cash" Program.

Drink Coupon Details

  • Both Alcohol and Soda Drink coupons were previously available for purchase through Bon Voyage, both online and by phone. They were sold in groups of four coupons - $23.00 for 4 Bar Credits, $7.75 for 4 Soft Drink Credits.

  • Drink Coupons do not save you anything other than the 15% added gratuity that was applied when paying for drinks with your Sail & Sign Card. This DOES NOT stop your waiter/bartender from getting a tip on your purchase with drink coupons. They still get a tip, it is automatically credited to them when the coupon is entered into the computer system.

  • Any drinks valued over the face value of the drink coupon (over $5.75 for alcohol, and over $1.95 for soda) will have the difference in value charged to your Sail & Sign account, in most cases. Sometimes, when the value is close you will not be charged the difference, this is all dependent on your bartender. Carnival's policy is to charge any difference. On a $5.75 alcoholic drink the savings comes to $0.87 cents, on a $1.95 soda the savings comes to $0.30 cents.

  • One of the few instances where drink coupons could save cruisers more is if you were a Guinness drinker. Guinness is priced at $5.95/beer onboard, which is only $0.20 cents over the coupon value, and in some instances cruisers were not charged this difference. So, you could pay $5.75 for a Guinness instead of $5.95 + 15% gratuity = $6.85. The savings in this case would be $1.10/beer by using a drink coupon.

  • Drink Coupon Facts:
    • Drink coupons are nonrefundable.
    • Drink coupons do not expire and can be used on future cruises.
    • Drink coupons do not stop your waiter/bartender from getting a tip.
    • Drink coupons cannot be used for room service or drinks in the mini-fridge in your cabin.
    • Drink coupons are delivered to you in the Main Dining Room by the Maître d' on the first night you choose to dine there. If you do not plan on dining in the Main Dining Room but still want your coupons just stop by and pick them up from the Maître d' any night.
    • Carnival's policy is to charge your Sail & Sign Card for the difference in price from the face value of the drink coupon to a higher priced drink. You may get lucky and not be charged.
    • If you use a drink coupon for a drink of lesser value than the face value of the drink coupon you will lose that money.

The "Official" Carnival Alcohol Policy

(Bringing Alcohol On Board On Embarkation Day)

  • Guests are prohibited from bringing alcoholic beverages on board. However, at the beginning of the cruise during embarkation day, guests (21 years of age and older) may bring on board one bottle (max of 750ml) of wine or champagne, per person, only in their carry-on luggage.

  • A $10 corkage fee per bottle will be charged should you wish to consume this wine in the main dining room.
    • A corkage fee is a charge exacted at a restaurant for every bottle of liquor served that was not bought on the premises.
    • Bringing the bottle to the table already opened can sometimes avoid this fee.

  • On embarkation day, each guest may bring a small quantity of non-alcoholic beverages on board only in their carry-on luggage. A small quantity is considered a maximum of 12 bottles and/or cans, 20 ounces each or less.

  • All alcohol/hard liquor/beer (sealed, unopened bottles/cans), wine/champagne over the allowable 1-bottle per guest (sealed, unopened bottles) or excessive quantities of non-alcoholic beverages (over 12 per person, sealed, unopened bottles/cans) will be confiscated and stored for safekeeping until the end of the voyage. The retained item(s) will be available for collection onboard in a designated location on the morning of debarkation. Unsealed liquids that are prohibited will be discarded, as well as any unclaimed items left after the voyage, and no compensation will be given in either case.

Additional Notes:

  • You may bring on more than one bottle of wine or champagne per person as long as the total quantity per person does not exceed 750ml. The typical 4 pack of small wine bottles are 187ml each, for a total of 748ml.
  • If you buy alcohol in any port during your cruise you will be instructed to turn it in when you are screened during reboarding. You will then be allowed to pick it up on the last night of the cruise.
  • Alcohol purchased from the Duty Free Shop onboard the ship is held and delivered to your cabin on the last night of the cruise.
  • You will be allowed to keep any non-alcoholic beverages purchased in ports as long as they are sealed and they fit in the same size and quantity limits as when you first boarded. They do not track how many non-alcoholic beverages you initially brought onboard on embarkation day. Even if you brought your limit, you are still allowed to bring on additional non-alcoholic items from the ports.
  • If you want to bring a cooler onboard the max size is 12"H x 12"W x 12"L.
    • Be aware: Carnival is very strict on this size limit of these carry-on coolers. Cruisers have been known to have to leave behind coolers just one inch larger in any one direction.
    • Carry-on coolers also work well as another ice bucket in the room. The ice bucket typically provided in the cabin is quite small.
    • Carnival's Cooler Restriction Policy: "Carnival Cruise Lines does not allow guests to bring large coolers on board its vessels. However small, personal-sized coolers, no larger than 12”H x 12”W x 12”L for the purpose of housing small quantities of non-alcoholic beverages and/or medications are permitted as carry-on luggage. Screening and movement of large coolers through embarkation is an impediment to the boarding and security screening process; therefore, large coolers are not permitted as carry-on or checked luggage."

Smuggling Alcohol On Board

Smuggle at your own risk!

  • There are currently no retributions other than the alcohol being confiscated if you get caught. The confiscated alcohol will even be returned to you at the end of the cruise if it is confiscated in the original manufacturer sealed container. All other containers will not be returned.

  • Carnival confiscates dozens of water/soda/wine bottles that have been refilled with liquor prior to almost every cruise. It’s been this way for a long time. You have a VERY LOW chance of getting smuggled liquor on this way.

  • People tend to smuggle because purchasing liquor through the Fun Shops / Bon Voyage is 2-3 times more expensive than buying it at their local liquor store. You also need to weigh in the convenience of having it waiting for you in your cabin versus having to go to the store to purchase it, repackageing it to smuggle, then transporting it to the ship and hoping it doesn't get caught. When you weigh in all the factors purchasing through the Fun Shops / Bon Voyage is a pretty good option. Don't forget to also check out the "Cheers" Beverage Program that Carnival is now offering on most of its' ships.
